DUSHANBE -- Most Tajik citizens who join extremist groups are being recruited through the internet, according to the Tajik State Committee for National Security (GKNB), Asia-Plus reported Tuesday (May 22).

"Internet-imams sitting abroad recruit our young people into extremist groups ... and spread Salafist ideas," said a GKNB report shown on state TV Monday (May 21).

The report singled out the Zello app, which allows users to hold single conversations or broadcast audio messages to large groups, as a key potential platform enabling users to hear extremist sermons.

Last year in Tajikistan, authorities registered more than 1,300 extremism- and terrorism-related crimes and detained more than 400 individuals on suspicion of terrorist and extremist activities, according to the GKNB.
