DUSHANBE -- Tajikistan's Council of Ulema released a statement accusing Iran of committing provocations in Tajikistan, Asia-Plus reported Thursday (May 24).

Iran is trying to whip up trouble in Tajikistan, according to the statement, posted on the Tajik Committee for Religious Affairs (KDR)'s website Wednesday (May 23).

Iran works to destabilise Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, said the council in its statement, adding that "if Iran glimpses even the slightest benefit ... it will immediately play the leading role in destabilising any region, laying the blame for that on enemies of Islam and of Muslims."

Dozens of Tajiks Monday (May 21) gathered near the Iranian embassy in Dushanbe to protest Tehran's alleged interference in Tajikistan's affairs.
