BISHKEK -- Inmates at Kyrgyzstan's only female penal colony will soon receive treatment for drug addiction if they request it, 24.kg reported Thursday (June 21), quoting Taalaibek Japarov, chairman of the country's penal service.

The "clean zone" building for such inmates has been constructed and will be operational by the end of June, Japarov said at a news conference.

A similar building for treating drug addiction already exists at an all-male prison colony in Moldovanovka, he said.

The penal service plans soon to examine the health of all its inmates for the first time in 22 years, Japarov said. The goal is to use those findings to compile a common electronic database listing all ill prisoners.
