DUSHANBE -- The European Commission allocated €60,000 (630,000 TJS) in humanitarian funding to help communities affected by a recent flood in Tajikistan, according to a statement from the European Union (EU) Delegation to Tajikistan Friday (June 22).

Heavy and prolonged rains May 16-21 flooded parts of southern Tajikistan, taking six lives and affecting 1,145 households (5,725 people) in nine villages of Khatlon Province. The rains also destroyed infrastructure, according to the statement.

The aid will provide essential items, including bedding, kitchen sets and mud-cleaning tools, to 500 flood-affected families (2,500 Tajiks) for three months, the statement said.

The programme will also include hygiene awareness sessions to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases.

The aid is part of the EU's contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said the statement.
