BISHKEK -- Two Kyrgyz police officers were convicted of torture in 2017, Interior Ministry (MVD) Chief of Staff Joldoshbek Khamzanov said at a Monday (June 25) Bishkek roundtable on preventing torture, 24.kg reported.

Last year, the MVD forwarded three criminal cases on torture to the General Prosecutor's Office, he said.

The three cases included accusations of torture against six police officers, he said, adding that two of those six were convicted.

The MVD is strengthening its efforts to prevent torture, he said, noting that every police station has a hotline enabling citizens to "report the illegal actions of police officers".

"[We] are installing video cameras in [MVD] jails," he said. "There are 271 cameras. Six of them can be viewed online."
