ISSYK-KUL, Kyrgyzstan -- The Issyk-Kul District Court sentenced several members of an extremist movement who refused to send their children to school, 24.kg reported Monday (July 2).
The parents are supporters of the Yakyn Inkar religious movement, which a Bishkek court designated as extremist last year. They forbade their children from going to school, going outside, reading and using the phone, the district prosecutor's office said.
The accused earlier had been fined for violating their children's right to public education. After they failed to comply, the prosecutor's office filed three criminal cases accusing the parents of failure to fulfill their duties in the upbringing of a minor and of failure to obey a court decision.
The court found the parents guilty, sentencing the fathers to 1-2 years in a penal colony while postponing punishment for the mothers.
"Now two children already attend school, and the rest will start their studies on September 1," according to the prosecutor's office, adding that it is "constantly monitoring the further fulfillment of these duties by these parents".
