Central Asian states, EU discuss regional security, development

ASHGABAT -- The foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan met with European Union (EU) officials Monday (July 9) in Ashgabat to discuss regional development and security issues, according to an EU statement.

The meeting constituted the 5th round of the High-level Political and Security Dialogue between the EU and Central Asian states.

Afghanistan attended as a special guest.

The sides discussed border management, drug trafficking, and counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism.

Also covered were prospects for regional co-operation in water resources and environmental management.
