ALMATY -- Police have arrested one suspect in connection to the slaying of Kazakh figure skater Denis Ten in Almaty, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Friday (July 20), quoting Almaty prosecutor Berik Zhuiriktayev.

Ten, 25, was stabbed repeatedly Thursday (July 19) after he confronted two thieves attempting to steal his car mirrors in Almaty. He died of his wounds at the hospital.

Police detained Nuraly Qiyasov, a Zhambyl Province native born in 1994, Zhuiriktayev said on Friday, adding that he has confessed.

Almaty police said they have identified the second suspect and are looking for him.

Ten won a bronze medal in Sochi in 2014, making him the first Kazakh figure skater to earn an Olympic medal. Numerous figure skaters from around the world eulogised him on social media.
