ASTANA -- Kazakhstan yanked the operating licences of 88 foreign TV channels that failed to comply with the country's registration law, said the Ministry of Information and Communication in a statement Wednesday (August 8).

The channels failed to register as legal entities or their Kazakh offices within six months after the law took effect January 9, said the ministry.

Many Russian channels were banned, including Russia Today and NTV Plus 3D.

The ministry said 219 foreign TV channels complied with the law and will be able to keep broadcasting to Kazakhstan.
