BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan are working on a potential land swap agreement along their border, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Wednesday (August 15).
The deal would involve the transfer of the Barak exclave, which contains 230 hectares of Kyrgyz-administered land surrounded by Uzbek territory, for land around the village of Birleshken in Andijan Province, Uzbekistan, according to Burkanbek Ashyrov, head of the Barak village.
About 20 Kyrgyz families remain in the Barak exclave, which is administered by Ak-Tash village of Kara-Suu District, Osh Province, Kyrgyzstan.
The exchange process could take up to two years, according to Ashyrov.
The two governments have formally delineated about 85% of the 1,400km-long Kyrgyz-Uzbek border since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
