Tajik ex-IS militant gets 17 years in prison


KHATLON, Tajikistan -- A court in Khatlon Province sentenced a Tajik man to 17 years in prison after his conviction for fighting alongside the "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria, Asia-Plus reported Friday (August 17), citing the Prosecutor General's Office.

Investigators found that Sultonbek Shodmonov, 33, of Kushoniyon District, was doing migrant work in Kazan, Russia, when he established ties with IS members on social networks.

He had a 2009 conviction, reported Asia-Plus without reporting the crime or the location.

He reportedly crossed into Syria from Turkey in May 2014 and joined IS.
