ASTANA -- US and Kazakh officials conferred in Astana Wednesday-Thursday (August 22-23) to review their bilateral efforts to fight nuclear smuggling, said the US embassy in Astana in an August 23 statement.

The countries signed a communiqué in May 2006 on upgrading Kazakhstan's ability to thwart nuclear smuggling.

Specialists from both countries assessed Kazakhstan's ability to prevent, detect and respond to nuclear smuggling and discussed the next steps the two countries could take.

The August 22-23 session was the sixth review of the countries' progress in implementing the 2006 communiqué. They conducted previous reviews in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Since signing the accord, Kazakhstan has "become a regional leader in countering nuclear smuggling", said the US embassy.
