BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz-Kazakh Business Council held its first meeting in Bishkek Wednesday (October 3), Kazinform reported.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kyrgyzstan and the Foreign Trade Chamber of Kazakhstan signed a memorandum formalising the creation of the council.

Kazakhstan is interested in expanding co-operation with Kyrgyzstan in water and energy, agriculture, transportation, communications, the mining and processing industries and tourism, Kazakh officials said said.

Kazakhstan mainly exports flour, wheat, plant products, pastries and candy, hardware, coal and household appliances to Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan exports fruits, vegetables, textile goods, ore, farm products and lightbulbs to Kazakhstan.

Trade between the two nations last year reached more than $750 million. Kazakhstan has expressed interest in increasing that figure to $1 billion per year.
