US provides $8 million in equipment to boost Tajik border security
DUSHANBE -- Top Tajik and US officials attended a ceremony last week in Dushanbe to mark the handover of more than $8 million (75.3 million TJS) of equipment to Tajik security agencies, according to a US embassy statement.
The United States provided "construction equipment, heavy construction machinery and tactical vehicles", said the embassy on October 5.
The equipment is meant to "help the Border Guards and the Ministry of Defence to construct modern obstacles to illicit traffic in the Afghan border region of [Tajikistan's] Khatlon Province, while tactical vehicles will increase their ability to patrol that area", the statement said.
In the past 26 years, the United States "has provided more than $1.8 billion [16.9 billion TJS] in development assistance" to Tajikistan, it added.
