Kazakhstan loosens requirements for cutting off communications

AFP

ASTANA -- Kazakh authorities have taken on increased powers that will allow them to cut off all communications for potential emergencies, including if the country faces the risk of social upheaval.

Before new legislation was adopted by the government Sunday (October 28), authorities had the right to cut off communications in the event of natural and man-made emergencies.

New amendments now allow for a shutdown of all communications if there exists a "threat" of such emergencies, as well as "emergencies of a social character".
