ASTANA -- A housing construction programme in Kazakhstan has helped tens of thousands of families, Kazinform reported, citing Minister of Investment and Development Zhenis Kassymbek.

"According to the results of the first nine months of this year, 8.8 million sq. meters of housing became available in the country as part of the Nurly Zher Government Programme," Kassymbek said at a cabinet session Tuesday (November 6).

"This is 11.6% more than a year ago," he added.

More than 77,000 Kazakh families have improved their living conditions and about 9,500 families among them have bought housing built with public funds, according to Kassymbek.

Investment in housing construction has increased by 31.5% compared to last year and has reached 818.9 billion KZT ($2.21 billion), he said.

Private investment exceeds public investment in that housing construction by 8 to 1, he said.

This year the government plans to commission through public investment at least 12.1 million sq. meters of housing, he said.
