ASTANA -- The US embassy in Astana and the British Council Kazakhstan have begun accepting applications for a professional English programme for Kazakh journalists, according to a statement from the embassy Wednesday (November 21).
The 12-month programme is set to begin on February 11 in Almaty, Astana, Aktobe, Aktau, Shymkent, Karaganda, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Kostanai.
The deadline for the application is December 11. The embassy will inform selected participants by January 25, 2019.
The training "is designed to support Kazakhstan's aspiration to develop the professionalism of journalists and expand knowledge of the English language as it becomes a trilingual society", said the statement.
During the programme, Kazakh journalist will learn not only English but also work on practical journalism assignments that require English language skills.
Freelance and staff journalists working for Kazakh media outlets are eligible to apply even if they don't meet minimum English language requirements, the statement said.
More than 200 Kazakh journalists have completed the professional English language training programme for journalists since 2016, according to the embassy.
