ASTANA -- Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry urged countries involved in the crisis in the Sea of Azov "to prevent any escalation of tensions", Kazinform reported Tuesday (November 27), citing a ministry statement.

Russian sailors boarded and captured three Ukrainian ships Sunday (November 25) in the Sea of Azov, accusing them of illegally entering Russian waters off the coast of Crimea in the Kerch Strait.

"We welcome the resumption of passage of civil vessels in the Kerch Strait. We call the parties to display maximum responsibility and prevent any escalation of tensions," said the statement.

Kazakhstan will back UN Security Council plans aimed at the "de-escalation of tensions in the Sea of Azov", it said.
