Fugitive Kyrgyz customs chief arrested in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Azerbaijani authorities arrested the former chief of the Kyrgyz Customs Service Wednesday (December 5) at the request of Kyrgyz authorities, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

Police detained Adamkul Junusov at the Baku airport, Anastasia Piskur of the Kyrgyz Financial Police told RFE/RL.

Kyrgyz authorities are flying to Azerbaijan to extradite Junusov, she added.

Junusov, who was chief of the Customs Service from 2013 to 2016, is wanted in Kyrgyzstan on charges of abuse of office. His alleged crimes cost the Kyrgyz government 166 million KGS ($2.1 million), according to the Financial Police.
