BISHKEK -- The fight against corruption is a Kyrgyz government priority, President Sooronbai Jeenbekov said in a statement Sunday (December 9) marking International Anti-Corruption Day, 24.kg reported.

"Those who abuse state powers for the sake of their own pockets should not only be punished according to the law but also should be subject to public shame," Jeenbekov said in the statement.

"Corruption is a disease affecting all spheres of society, hindering the effective development of a state," the statement said. "It breeds inequality and injustice."

"Therefore, the fight against this evil is a priority of state policy. The underlying principles of this policy are the rule of law, justice and the inevitability of punishment," it said.

Jeenbekov highlighted anti-corruption measures the country has taken "to eliminate the human factor and contacts of civil servants with citizens, protect entrepreneurs from unwarranted interference in their business and from frequent illegal inspections".

He also urged for the active participation of civil society in the fight against corruption.
