TASHKENT -- Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have agreed to start issuing a single visa valid for both countries, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.

The so-called "Silk Visa" system is expected to begin functioning in February 2019 and is meant to boost tourism in the region.

The move will help attract foreigners to the region and make it more popular, Ulugbek Kasimkhojayev, acting first deputy chairman of the Uzbek State Committee for Tourism, told reporters in Tashkent Thursday (December 20).

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have expressed interest in the project, he said.

Kazakhstan is working to attract Azerbaijan and Turkey to the Silk Visa project, which is intended to function like the Schengen visa system in Europe, Kazakh officials said previously.
