DUSHANBE -- Police in Magnitogorsk, Russia, have begun raiding the residences of Central Asian migrant workers, ASIA-Plus reported Thursday (January 10), quoting migrants in that city.

The news comes after a December 31 apartment building explosion widely attributed to a gas leak killed at least 39 Magnitogorsk residents, including eight Tajiks from two families.

"Police have tightened their inspections of labour migrants' documents. Several persons have already been placed in a detention centre," a Tajik migrant worker told ASIA-Plus by phone.

Police are not explaining their reasons for conducting the raids but "there are rumours that according to one theory by law enforcement, the apartment building explosion was a terrorist act organised by a Central Asian", said the migrant.

Russia's Investigative Committee has said that it found no explosive traces in the rubble of the destroyed building.

[It is necessary to] thoroughly investigate the origins of the leaked gas. You bet it's from Central Asia (maybe in a small container)...

FSB [operatives] blew up the building themselves. Now they are trying to distract [the public] by pointing fingers at the migrants.
