TASHKENT -- Users of all internet providers in Uzbekistan say they have been able to access social networks -- namely, Facebook, YouTube and VKontakte -- freely since Monday (January 14) without having to resort to virtual private networks (VPNs) and proxy servers, CA-News reported Tuesday (January 15).
Unexplained problems with access to Facebook started last September. Users later noticed similar difficulty with viewing YouTube.
However, major state-owned news agencies and government ministries were almost always able to access Facebook and YouTube without using VPNs or other devices.
Some social media users attributed restored social network access to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's upcoming visit to Germany, scheduled for January 20-22.
They have realised already that shutting down the Internet is meaningless. [People] get into the web via the VPN no matter what
