BISHKEK -- A Kyrgyz musical, "The Song of the Tree" (Darak Yry), was screened twice at the January 3-14 Palm Springs International Film Festival in California, said one of the film's producers, Tatiana Petrik, AKIpress reported Tuesday (January 15).

"The Song of the Tree", which promoters called the "first-ever folkloric musical from Kyrgyzstan", depicts a forbidden romance on the Kyrgyz plains of the 1800s.

"This unexpectedly entertaining musical is a winning new genre for cinema from Kyrgyzstan, showing the colorful nomadic traditions and the history and customs of Kyrgyz people, who have powerful beliefs in superstition and their concepts of honor," according to the festival's website.
