DUSHANBE -- The US Embassy in Tajikistan Monday (January 28) handed over a ground sensor radar system to the country's Border Guard Forces, according to an embassy statement.

The radar, worth $3.8 million (36 million TJS), will allow the border guards to "persistently monitor portions of their border that would otherwise remain unobserved by routine patrols", said the statement.

The system will be particularly useful in areas "where long distances between outposts in harsh terrain make persistent patrolling challenging", it added.

US Chargé d'Affaires Kevin Covert and Gen. Col. Saimumin Yatimov, the chairman of the Tajik State Committee of National Security (GKNB), attended the ceremony.

The United States has provided more than $1.8 billion (17 billion TJS) in development and assistance for almost 27 years, according to the statement.
