Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan reach agreement on border spat

BATKEN PROVINCE, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan's deputy prime ministers, Jenish Razakov and Azim Ibrohim, signed a protocol Monday (March 18) on resolving the dispute over the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, the Kyrgyz government said in a statement, according to 24.kg.

The countries reached an agreement on continuing the construction of the Kok-Tash–Ak-Sai–Tamdyk road.

"Transport in the border areas will be fully restored," according to the statement. "Deputy Prime Minister Jenish Razakov stressed that the signing of the protocol took into account the mutual interests of the two countries. In addition, he and the heads of relevant national and local government agencies visited the construction site of the Kok-Tash–Ak-Sai–Tamdyk road."

Kyrgyz-Tajik investigation teams will study the consequences of the situation on the border, according to the Kyrgyz government.

Violence broke out Wednesday (March 13) when Tajiks protested a Kyrgyz road-building project on the border. Rock throwing and gunshots resulted. Two Tajiks were killed.

The injured included a Kyrgyz police officer who was shot in the chest, according to AFP.
