STRASBOURG, France -- Kazakhstan is interested in strengthening co-operation with the Council of Europe (CE), Kazinform reported, citing Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko. Those plans include further work on human rights.

Vassilenko made his remarks Tuesday (March 26) in Strasbourg, France, at a CE meeting on the imminent launch of the second phase of the CE's Neighbourhood Co-operation Priorities for Kazakhstan 2019-2022 programme.

Kazakhstan is particularly interested in co-operation on ensuring the rule of law, modernising its justice system and joining relevant CE conventions, said Vassilenko.

Representatives of the CE praised Kazakhstan's progress in ensuring the rule of law and expressed readiness for further co-operation in protecting civil rights and liberties, fighting corruption and ensuring gender equality.
