Tajikistan jails 5 extremists

SUGHD PROVINCE -- A court in Bobojon Ghafurov District, Sughd Province, sentenced five Sughd residents to prison for belonging to banned groups, Asia-Plus reported Friday (April 12).

Two of them -- Abdughani Bozorov, 48, and Murod Namozov, 35 -- were identified as members of the Salafi movement, which is banned in Tajikistan.

Bozorov was found guilty of organising activity as part of an extremist group and was sentenced to six years. Namozov received one year and two months for failing to report a crime.

Three other residents received various jail terms for membership in the banned Islamic Movement of Turkestan (another name for the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan).

Yoqubjon Jouraboyev, 35, and Davlat Olimbayev, 28, were convicted of organising activity as part of an extremist group and received five years in prison each.

Abduvali Yulchiyev, 29, was sentenced to six months in prison for failing to report a crime.
