TASHKENT -- A two-day-long international conference on fighting tuberculosis (TB) began in Tashkent Wednesday (May 22), the US embassy in Tashkent said in a statement.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Uzbek Health Ministry and the Uzbek Republican Specialised Scientific and Practical Medical Centre for Phthisiology and Pulmonology are sponsoring the conference.
International specialists, Central Asian government officials and Uzbek healthcare providers are set to discuss ways to implement the World Health Organisation's End-TB Strategy and the Declaration of the United Nations on Ending TB.
USAID has partnered with Uzbekistan for more than 20 years to combat TB.
US assistance to Uzbekistan takes many forms, including close co-operation "to secure the border with Afghanistan and to interdict the illicit movement of narcotics", the White House said in a statement in May 2018.
