TASHKENT -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Saturday (June 1) welcomed European Council (EC) President Donald Tusk to Tashkent, the Tashkent Times reported.

The visit is Tusk's first to Uzbekistan. The EC lays out overall policy directions for the European Union (EU).

EU co-operation with Central Asia has taken many forms, including the Border Management Programme in Central Asia, which helps those countries secure their borders.

Officials discussed expanding co-operation in trade, innovation and investment, transport, science, education and health care.

Ongoing economic reforms in Uzbekistan open up opportunities for leading European businesses to expand their presence in Uzbekistan, said Tusk. He underscored the importance of strengthening co-operation in the region under the EU's new strategy for Central Asia.

The two sides discussed international and regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan.
