BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security (GKNB) Sunday (June 2) arrested a former government official who faces accusations of corruption, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported Monday (June 3).

Manasbek Arabayev, former chief of the presidential office's department for judicial system reform, was jailed Sunday (June 2) to await trial.

Kyrgyzstan has sought to have an efficient and trusted judiciary to enforce the rule of law against all offenders, including terrorists and extremists.

GKNB spokesman Rakhat Sulaimanov did not provide details on the accusations lodged against Arabayev.

Arabayev worked in former president Almazbek Atambayev's office and became department chief in 2015. He was dismissed in May 2018, six months after President Sooronbay Jeenbekov took the office.

Arabayev is among several of Atambayev's associates whom authorities have arrested since he left office in December 2017.
