Kazakh president orders write-off of some citizens' debts

NUR-SULTAN -- Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev Wednesday (June 26) ordered a write-off of millions of dollars in debt for some of the country's poorest residents.

The move will free 255,000 Kazakhs of debt completely while alleviating the plight of thousands of others, Tokayev said. The write-offs will cover debts of as much as 300,000 KZT ($800), he said, adding they will be limited to specific categories of debtors, such as large families and some disadvantaged groups.

Poverty and its frustrations have been considered a motive for extremism.

Tokayev was elected earlier in June.
