NEW YORK -- A Kazakh-born US citizen faces charges in New York of fighting for "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria and giving weapons training to IS members, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported last week, citing a US Department of Justice (DOJ) statement.
Ruslan Asainov fought for IS for five years, said the DOJ, adding that the Syrian Democratic Forces captured him and handed him over to US forces.
He travelled from New York to Turkey and then to Syria in 2013 and was caught in 2018, said prosecutors in US federal court.
Asainov is accused of being an IS sniper and weapons instructor. He also allegedly tried to recruit more members to the group.
