TERMEZ, Uzbekistan -- The US Department of Energy (DOE) Sunday (September 15) handed over radiation detection equipment to Uzbekistan, the US Embassy in Uzbekistan said in a statement.

US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Daniel Rosenblum and Uzbek Special Representative for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev attended the ceremony at the "Friendship Bridge" connecting Afghanistan to Uzbekistan in Termez.

The newly installed equipment at the bridge includes radiation portal monitors to scan vehicle and pedestrian traffic, mobile detection systems and handheld/portable detectors.

The equipment, provided by the US DOE National Nuclear Security Administration, will help Uzbekistan combat the smuggling of radioactive material, the statement said.

"I am pleased to announce a new milestone in co-operation between our two nations in the area of international nuclear security," said Rosenblum.

"This is an important step in advancing US-Uzbek co-operation in border security," he said.
