Militant commander killed in Punjab

LAHORE -- A militant commander recently was killed in a clash with police in Khushab District, Punjab Province, Dunya TV reported June 7.

The commander's suspected accomplices escaped, police sources said, adding that police seized arms and suicide vests at the scene.

The commander was involved in a police officer's slaying and was plotting attacks during Ramadan, police sources said.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Muslims June 7 began fasting for the holy month in Ramadan. It was the first time in many years that the entire nation's Muslims began fasting on the same day, according to Dunya TV.

The Ramadan moon was seen nationwide at the same time June 6, Mufti Munib ur Rehman, chairman of the national Ruet-e-Hilal (moon sighting) committee, said.
