40 Muftis declare honour killing as 'un-Islamic', 'unpardonable sin'

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD -- Forty Muftis (Islamic Scholars) termed killing women in the name of honour as 'un-Islamic' and an 'unpardonable sin', Dawn reported June 13.

The Muftis associated with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) issued a joint fatwa (decree) on June 12 saying that according to Islam the 'mature' women are allowed to marry of their own free will.

"Burning or killing of women in the name of honour is an unpardonable crime and government should protect women rights," the Fatwa said.

The Fatwa came after recent women's killings in Abbottabad, Murree and Lahore, demanding implementation of law to curb such crimes.
