Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbek filmmakers are shooting a motion picture about the birth of the terrorist Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported July 8.

The film "Sacred Desire" (Mukaddas Istak), about the oppression of a religious individual during Soviet times, includes as characters Takhir Yuldash (Yuldashev) and Juma Namangani, the real-life founders of the IMU.

The film "denounces the ideology of terrorism", an unidentified actor starring in it told RFE/RL. "The purpose of the film is to fight Islamic militants and [their] alien imported ideology."

Authorities plan to show the film nationwide in theatres on September 1, the country's Independence Day.

Namangani and Yuldash were killed in Afghanistan in 2001 and 2009, respectively.
