Turkmenistan tightens regulations on entering country

By Dzhumaguly Annayev

ASHGABAT -- Since July 1, Turkmen authorities have tightened entry regulations at all overland border crossings and international seaports and bus stations, a spokesperson for the Turkmen Migration Service who requested anonymity told Caravanserai.

Increased scrutiny will apply to Turkmen citizens who are returning home after lengthy and illegal stays abroad, the source said.

Authorities are taking the steps after they learned that Central Asian militants in the Middle East are coming home after their various groups proved incapable of continuing to pay them, the source added.

Turkmen intelligence agencies are monitoring Turkmen citizens who arrive on flights from Turkey after overstaying their Turkish visas, the source said.
