Kyrgyzstan strengthens security on Kazakh border

By Asker Sultanov

BISHKEK -- Like Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan is beefing up security on its frontier with Kazakhstan after a deadly terrorist attack in Almaty -- Kazakhstan's largest city -- July 18.

Gunmen killed four police officers and two civilians in Almaty that day. Police made two arrests in Almaty.

In response, Kyrgyzstan stepped up security measures at its border outposts and border crossings, the State Border Service (GPS) said in a July 19 statement.

The crossings along the Kyrgyz-Kazakhstani border have gone on heightened alert and have received reinforcements, the GPS said.

Uzbekistan prolonged security restrictions along its own border with Kazakhstan that it initially imposed in late June in connection with a Tashkent security summit.
