Staff Report

ASTANA -- A court in Aktobe, Kazakhstan, August 11 sentenced three Kazakhstani men to prison terms ranging from six and a half to eight years for spreading social and religious hatred via WhatsApp, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

The defendants created a chat room on WhatsApp where they shared links to prohibited extremist websites, prosecutors found.

Two of the three defendants, all of whom come from Shaklar city, intend to appeal, their lawyers said.

The news comes after terrorists killed eight Kazakhstanis in Aktobe in a series of attacks June 5. Authorities killed 18 gunmen and made 7 arrests.
