ASHGABAT -- The new Ashgabat International Airport opened formally on September 17, with an array of high-tech security features, Turkmen security official Mergen Kovusov told Caravanserai.

"The airport is full of equipment for detecting metal items, explosives, narcotics and toxins in checked and hand baggage," he said. "It also has microwave scanners for searching passengers before they board their planes."

The airport cost almost US $2.3 billion (8.1 billion TMT) to build, according to Char Tarapdan radio.
