Kazakhs learn about multi-ethnic policing

Staff Report

AKTOBE -- Kazakhstani police are attending a September 20-22 Aktobe seminar on policing in multi-ethnic societies, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said in a September 20 statement.

About 15 police officers and local government officials from across Kazakhstan are learning about "police sensitivity to inter-ethnic relations, as well as how to build capacity in dealing with inter-ethnic relations within police structures", the OSCE said. Trainers come from Canada, Ukraine and other countries.

"Police engagement with representatives of all facets of society helps to defuse potentially volatile situations," OSCE Astana Programme Office Head and Ambassador György Szabó said, according to the OSCE.

The OSCE and Interior Ministry (MVD) co-organised the seminar.
