Staff Report

BISHKEK -- Eighty Kyrgyz representing the media, theological studies, civil society and government attended a September 28 Bishkek conference on the media's role in fighting violent extremism, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said in a statement.

The Kyrgyz came from Bishkek, Osh and Batken. The conference's purpose was "to create a platform for discussing mechanisms for co-operation between media, civil society and government bodies in countering violent extremism", the OSCE said.

Workshops at the conference included one on linguistic analysis of extremist materials and another on "developing alternative narratives in the media", the OSCE added.
