TASHKENT -- The Uzbekistani military recently extended the contract for professional troops to five years, Podrobno.uz reported last week. If the soldier has fewer than five years until he reaches the maximum age for military service, the contract ends when he attains that age.
Under the old rules, contract privates and sergeants served for three years and commissioned officers served for five years.
Uzbekistan's military is a mix of professional contract troops and draftees.
