DUSHANBE -- The fight against terrorism dominated media coverage in Tajikistan in 2016, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Tajik service reported Tuesday (December 6), quoting various scholars and analysts.
The major theme of terrorism coverage was the trials of those arrested in connection with terrorism charges, RFE/RL reported, adding that Tajik courts in 2016 reviewed about 1,000 cases in connection with citizens accused of belonging to the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) and other groups.
However, authorities found far fewer cases of extremist recruitment of Tajiks in 2016 than in 2015, RFE/RL reported. The number of young Tajiks going to Syria in 2016 was "paltry", General Prosecutor's Office spokesman Mukhammadmirzo Khalifazoda told RFE/RL.
