Uzbek suspect arrested in Istanbul nightclub massacre

Staff Report

ISTANBUL -- Turkish police are publicising the arrest of a man accused of killing 39 people at an Istanbul nightclub January 1, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported Tuesday (January 17).

The suspected gunman is Abdulkadir Masharipov, a native of Uzbekistan who received militant training in Afghanistan, Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said, adding that Masharipov had confessed.

Police nabbed Masharipov Monday (January 16) in Istanbul, according to Turkish media.

Masharipov apparently entered Turkey illegally in January 2016 and perpetrated the massacre on behalf of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Sahin added.
