Saudi Arabia deports suspected Kazakh extremist

Staff Report

ASTANA -- Saudi Arabia on February 18 deported a suspected Kazakhstani extremist to his homeland, e-islam.kz reported Wednesday (February 22), quoting the Kazakhstani National Security Committee (KNB) press office.

A. Abdujabbarov had been wanted internationally since 2015 "on suspicion of .... arousing religious discord and promoting terrorism", the KNB said in a statement.

In the early 2000s, Abdujabbarov created "extremist cells in Aktobe, Atyrau and Uralsk", said the KNB. "Several of his followers participated in terrorist acts in our country. Many others went to Afghanistan and Syria."

Abdujabbarov had been living in Saudi Arabia since 2006, where he allegedly continued to try to influence Kazakhstani students studying abroad.
