Authorities elaborate on US-Tajik joint exercise

By Nadin Bahrom

DUSHANBE -- The planned March 27-April 7 joint exercises of US and Tajik forces will include forces from the Tajik National Guard's Centre against Terrorism and Drug Trafficking, Interior Ministry (MVD) spokesperson Umarjon Emomali told Caravanserai Wednesday (March 29).

"We are confident that both sides will learn a great deal from each other," US embassy spokesman Jeff Ridenour told Caravanserai in a statement, adding that Tajik forces had shown "extraordinary hospitality".

Some of the goals of the exercise are "to develop the Tajiks' capacity to address violent extremism, terrorism, and narco-trafficking; enhance border security; and, confront other trans-regional threats", said US Army Gen. Joseph Votel in a March 9 statement.
