Uzbek confesses to Stockholm truck attack, say police

AFP

STOCKHOLM -- Swedish media Sunday (April 9) identified the suspect in the truck attack that killed four people in Stockholm Friday (April 7) as Rakhmat Akilov, an Uzbek construction worker who went underground to avoid being deported from Sweden.

Akilov has allegedly confessed to the attack, daily Expressen reported Sunday.

A stolen beer truck barreled into shoppers Friday (April 7) afternoon, smashing into the facade of the Ahlens department store.

The suspect was detained Friday evening in Marsta, a suburb north of Stockholm. According to several media outlets, he is an "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) supporter.

"His Facebook page shows sympathies to IS," the head of the Centre for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defence College, Magnus Ranstorp, told AFP.
