2 ISIL defendants convicted in Uzbekistan

Staff Report

FERGANA, Uzbekistan -- The Fergana Provincial Court for Criminal Cases convicted two Uzbekistani citizens of serving the cause of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Podrobno.uz reported Tuesday (April 25).

The defendants were Alijon Makhmudov and Orifjon Jurayev, both residents of Fergana Province. They went abroad in 2014 to work and became radicalised. They received eight- and seven-year prison sentences, respectively.

Among other acts meant to help ISIL, Makhmudov confessed to planning to join ISIL in Syria before his health forced him to return to Uzbekistan in June 2015. Jurayev confessed to donating money to the families of slain ISIL militants.
